Literacy

“Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written (and visual) materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning to enable an individual to achieve his or her goals, to develop his or her knowledge and potential and to participate fully in the wider society.” [Definition of literacy, UNESCO; 2004]

Literacy continues to be a focus within each subject and each year level. It underpins every element of the College Learning Framework in which learners are encouraged to use initiative, think critically, develop resilience, reflect and communicate effectively.

Strategies and approaches to enhance literacy skills across the College are linked to students being actively engaged in their learning. The Sale Diocese Literacy Framework for Secondary Schools is used as a reference point for the development of literacy skills within the College community.
