Health & Physical Education at Lavalla Catholic College aims to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to enable students to:
- Take positive action to protect, enhance and advocate for their own and others’ health, wellbeing, safety and physical activity participation locally, regionally and globally.
- Promote a sense of personal identity and wellbeing and to build and manage respectful relationships.
- Engage in and enjoy regular movement-based learning experiences.
Students are introduced to a wide variety of sporting games, challenge and adventure activities and life-long games. They begin to unravel their personal identity and values. They learn how to develop positive relationships and strategies to enhance their mental health. Students become aware of personal safety and how to keep themselves safe as they journey throughout life.
Students participate in varied physical activities designed to increase their own awareness of alternate sports, through to taking on peer education and leading roles within practical classes. Within the theory classes students begin to identify factors that affect both personal and wider community health and safety.
Students focus on optimising their own personal and also community health and wellbeing. They learn how to maintain healthy and active habits whilst experiencing different participatory roles in physical activity. Students explore strategies to refine their personal movement performance. They also explore how participation in physical activity and sport, influence personal identity and community culture. Personal and social skills such as teamwork, leadership and collaboration are fostered.
Healthy Lifestyles is a semester based elective that focuses on health. Topics such as health knowledge, health promotion, first aid, mental health and personal identity are covered. Practical sessions will include more lifestyle activities with a focus on movement for health benefits.
This unit gives students a foundation for further studies in VCE Physical Education or Health and Human Development.
Sporty Lifestyles is a semester based elective that focuses on exercise and sports science, fitness training and development of motor skills in a variety of sports. Students learn to set personal fitness goals, design and carry out a fitness training program and evaluate its success.
This unit gives students a foundation for further study in Physical Education and is the recommended unit for progress into this VCE subject.
Health & Physical Education
VCE Health & Human Development explores concepts of health and wellbeing, and human development, from a range of perspectives: individual and collective; local, national and global; and across time and the lifespan. Students develop health literacy as they connect their learning to their lives, communities and world. They develop a capacity to respond to health information, advertising and other media messages, enabling them to put strategies into action to promote health and wellbeing in both personal and community contexts.
VCE Physical Education explores the anatomical, biomechanical, physiological and skill acquisition principles to understand their role in producing and refining physical movement. Students participate in practical activities to examine the core concepts that underpin movement and that influence performance and participation in physical activity, sport and exercise.
Outdoor & Environmental Studies
VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies explores the different ways that humans interact with and relate to outdoor environments. Students will be involved in both passive and active outdoor activities that provide experiential knowledge of outdoor environments. Such knowledge is then enhanced through the theoretical study of outdoor environments from perspectives of environmental history, ecology and the social studies of human relationships with nature.
Lavalla Sports Enrichment Program
Lavalla Sports Enrichment Program has been designed to enable student athletes to achieve at the highest level of performance in their chosen field and also provide guidance on how to balance both their academic and sporting demands. Sports Enrichment students are provided with individual and group mentoring sessions, development of personal fitness and sporting profiles and extension of knowledge of performance enhancing techniques within elite sport. In addition they are provided the opportunity to attend recovery and strength & conditioning sessions, as well as exposure to specialised coaches in the various fields relevant to sport, such as nutrition, psychology and biomechanics.
