Gifted Education

Gifted and high ability learners are catered for in a number of ways.

Differentiated Curriculum enables students to explore different methods of completing learning tasks which may suit their particular learning styles.  Also, students are challenged to apply higher order thinking skills to the exploration of discipline based ideas and issues.

In-class enrichment helps individual students develop competencies in one or more subjects.  ‘Learning Journeys’ and contract work are initiatives used to extend students.

The Learning Enhancement Programme (LEP) allows for regular withdrawal for specific enrichment. These small groups of 8 to 10 students meet with a staff facilitator and develop problem solving and creative thinking abilities through open ended learning tasks. LEP membership allows students to interact within a small group environment as well as maintain their involvement in all facets of College life.

Exploring ‘off –site’ School-based programmes provides students with exciting opportunities to meet with students from other schools with similar interests as well as allowing them to apply the skills they are refining to an array of  diverse challenges.  These activities include Tournament of Minds, Debating, Student Conference Days, Melbourne Writers Festival, Gippspell  and guest speakers.

In Year 7 students are formally tested using the Raven’s Intelligence test. A number of standardised tests including NAPLAN, On Demand and ICAS Competitions are used to identify learning strengths and assist with identified weaknesses. These, in conjunction with parent information, Primary School profiles and staff nominations are used to design the most effective approach to providing for the varied gifts our learners possess.
